The Vatican is reportedly releasing Facebook and iPhone apps to spread the word of God among technically-savvy youngsters.

Facebook users can send virtual postcards of Pope Benedict XVI along with inspiring content from his speeches and messages via the Pope Meets You on Facebook app, Revolution reports.

Smartphone users will also be able to download video and audio news about the Vatican in eight different languages through their iPhone or iPod touch.

"The Pope is inviting us to promote a culture of dialogue, of respect and friendship, especially among young people," said Archbishop Claudio Celli, head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

A new Vatican website to mark the Catholic Church's World Communications day later this week has also been launched.

Results of the latest Mobile Advertising Report by Brightkite and GfK Technology revealed that smartphones may hold the key to growth in mobile advertising.
