Firms looking to employ search engine optimisation (SEO) to improve their search ranking should improve the security of their website, claims one expert.

In a recent blog post, Patricio Robles from Econsultancy said website security can have a "profound effect" on a company's search engine ranking.

"Good SEO isn't just about climbing the ranks; it's about staying there. And how well secured your website is can have a profound impact on your rankings," he writes.

He continues to say that the SEO ramifications can be "very painful" if a site is hacked and the best policy is to treat security as an important part of an overall optimisation strategy.

Recently during the conversion from Drupal to Wordpress, several of the CentralNetworks sites were hit with an exploit, according to a post on its blog.

This resulted in a major reduction in its organic search traffic from which it took around two weeks for the company's website to recover.
