Using organic search engine optimisation (SEO) is key to reaping significant long-term profits from a cost-effective investment, according to a Best Syndication blogger.

A recent post by Paul Thomposon on the site compares thinking about an internet marketing strategy without SEO to the existence of fish without water.

According to Mr Thomposon, search engines drive 60 to 80 per cent of total traffic to company websites, with the rest coming from referral channels. He also claims SEO helps elevate a website's ranking on related searches.

"You can make your online business a success either by doing search engine optimisation in-house or hiring a firm that provides professional SEO services," he writes.

He adds that SEO professionals can achieve a higher search engine rating by creating informative content, link building, social bookmarking and designing a website in a customer-friendly manner.

In a recent Econsultancy article, Kevin Gibbons noted that firms which invest in raising their online profile will emerge from the recession on top.
