Which is the most common browser?
Written on February 13, 2007
After a couple of months since the 2 big browsers (Internet Explorer and Firefox) launched their latest versions - 7.0 and 2.0 respectively - what do our clients web stats (provided by Google Analytics) show as the most popularly used browser?
The Top 5 are as follows:
1. Internet Explorer (Microsoft) - 84.5%
2. Firefox (Mozilla) - 11.41%
3. Safari (Mac) - 3.45%
4. Opera - 0.33%
5. Netscape - 0.21%
Which versions of Internet Explorer?
1. IE 6.0 - 58.29% - people are moving to 7.0, but the majority for the time being are still using 6.0
2. IE 7.0 - 40.20%
3. IE 5.5 - 0.65%
4. IE 5.01 - 0.43%
5. IE 5.0 - 0.23%
Which versions of Firefox?
1. FF 2.0 - 50.86% - the majority now use 2.0!
2. FF 1.5 - 35.23%
3. FF 1.0 - 4%
These stats, however you interpret them, show that internet users are fairly quickly moving to the latest browser platform. Whether it be that they; cant wait to adopt the latest technology, have had it shoved down their necks with flashing toolbars and various other attempts to upgrade or whether they really don’t care as long as it improves their user experience and security - remains to be known.
So what does all this mean if you own a website and rely on it for your business?
Well basically with each iteration of a browser the browser developers are trying to make their version as standards compliant as possible - this means they are trying to make their browsers adhere as closely as possible to the standards set out by W3C.
If you website is not well designed and coded then there is a strong chance your website will not display correctly in the new browsers.
What!?!?! I here you shout!
The best thing for you to do is to download the new browsers and test your websites thoroughly (Firefox 2.0 available here and Internet Explorer 7.0 available here)

Strangely enough (I provide SQL testing) my site has over 34% firefox, 46% IE and the rest are divide among Opera, Safari, etc. And 3.0 Beta 1 is used extensively. In fact this message is been written with Firefox 3 Beta 1. IE has no place on any of my systems either.
